Sustainable Hydropower

Based on over 40 years experience in developing and operating hydropower schemes in Iceland and elsewhere we have developed a comprehensive work program covering all stages of the process, from preliminary desk studies to full operation.

Our experts and project managers have extensive experience in managing complex hydropower and transmission projects. They have been responsible for the comprehensive management of all new power stations and

associated transmission systems that Landsvirkjun has constructed over the last decades. They have worked with numerous Icelandic and international engineering consultants, civil contractors and manufacturers of electromechanical equipment and have extensive experience in power station refurbishment and upgrades. Energy from earth's core

Landsvirkjun owns and operates two geothermal power stations in Northern Iceland; a 3 MWe station that commenced operation in 1969 and a more recent 60 MWe station. Our geothermal experts and project managers have extensive experience in managing geothermal power projects. Landsvirkjun is presently managing exploration and preparatory work for three geothermal power projects in North-East Iceland with a total capacity

of up to 400 MWe. Under the Icelandic Deep Drilling Project (IDDP), we are exploring the deep roots of geothermal systems in cooperation with other Icelandic power companies and international partners. The IDDP is a long-term project whose objective is to harness steam at great depths under supercritical conditions. The hydrothermal fluid at such depth is expected at a temperature of 400–600°C and pressure of 200-300 bar.
