Landsvirkjun Power was founded in 2007 as a subsidiary of Landsvirkjun, the National Power Company of Iceland, to manage its international operations. The purpose of Landsvirkjun Power is primarily to provide the expertise needed in the development and operations of power schemes.

Landsvirkjun was founded in 1965 as the National Power Company of Iceland. The company builds, runs and refurbishes hydroelectric and geothermal projects. It now owns and operates 13 hydroelectric and 2 geothermal power stations in Iceland with an installed capacity of around 2,000 MW.

 Landsvirkjun is a leader in generation of electricity from renewable resources in Iceland, and one of the largest renewable energy companies in Europe. The company expects to continue constructing new hydroelectric and geothermal plants in the coming two decades.

Landsvirkjun generated about 12.5 TWh in 2012, all from renewable energy sources. The company is currently (2013) constructing the 95 MW Budarhals hydroelectric project and plans to commence construction of two geothermal projects in 2014, with a total capacity of 180 MWe.

The Landsvirkjun organisation is structured to allow Landsvirkjun Power to utilize the experience and resources of the entire group. Our experts have carried out research and preparatory work, evaluated financial feasibility, managed design and construction, and operated and maintained all of Landsvirkjun’s hydroelectric and geothermal installations and high-voltage transmission systems in Iceland over the last 40 years.
